G2 Esports Are Bringing Mikyx Back, Replacing Targamas in the Process

Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle is eyeing a return to G2 Esports while reuniting with his old bot lane partner.

The Slovenian support player was integral to Europe’s most successful League of Legends roster. Between the years 2018 and 2020, G2 Esports made two Worlds semifinals (2018, 2020), one Worlds Final (2019), won LEC four times in a row and won MSI 2019. Even though that G2 roster is still regarded as the best Western team of all time, their time came to an end in 2021 with the star player Luka “Perkz” Perković leaving for Cloud9. Mikyx left the organization the next year after a disappointing 2021 in LEC, joining Excel Esports.

Before being known to most fans as a perennial seventh-place team, Excel made their first playoffs in the organization’s history in LEC 2022 Spring Split, after Mikyx joined the team. He was crucial to his team’s success in Spring, thanks to his synergy with his ADC Patrik “Patrik” Jírů and the structure he brought to the young roster. Excel once again made playoffs in Summer Split but made a disappointing exit with a 3-2 reverse sweep to Fnatic. But his performance in this split draw some criticism, with many saying the veteran support was underperforming.

In a similar situation, G2 Esports also underperformed, especially during Worlds 2022. The organization parted ways with their long-time jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski and their ADC Victor “Flakked” Lirola Tortosa, replacing the latter with the ex-Rogue bot laner Steven “Hans Sama” Liv. While people were expecting Hans Sama to play with Raphaël “Targamas” Crabbé, who had a good year overall, a new report from Upcomer’s Brieuc “LEC Wooloo” Seeger indicates this will not the case.

A reunion in the G2 Esports bot lane

According to Wooloo, G2 will bring Mikyx back to partner with Hans Sama. The two players played together in the 2018 EU LCS Season, on Misfits Gaming. Misfits missed the playoffs in their first split, and while got eliminated in the semis during the Summer of 2018. Both players have come a long way since then, and both are regarded among the best in their roles.

Still, despite being at the top of their roles, neither Mikyx nor Hans Sama had a particularly good Summer Split. As mentioned, Mikyx had a rocky performance on Excel, eventually losing their first best-of series in playoffs. On the other hand, Hans Sama spent the year in Team Liquid. TL had built a roster that was supposed to not only win LCS but also make some noise at international events. But they couldn’t find any success and did not qualify for Worlds in the end.
